Why do two piles of copper of the same weight fetch different prices? How grade, cleanliness, quantity and the market affect the price.
The first question most people ask when selling scrap copper is "How much per kilo?" But there is no single copper price. Two piles of the same weight can fetch clearly different amounts depending on what they contain.
1. Type of copper
Stripped, bright cable copper is the top grade. It is followed by pipe copper, tinned and enamelled copper, coil windings and mixed copper. When the grades are weighed separately, clean material gets its own price.
2. Cleanliness
Copper with solder, paint, plastic, iron clamps or insulation loses value in proportion to the foreign matter. Removing fittings and clamps raises the price.
3. Quantity
Larger amounts lower transport and sorting costs, which is reflected in the price per kilo. Saving up small amounts or setting up regular collection pays off.
4. The market
The copper price depends on the international metal exchange and the exchange rate; it can change even within the day. That is why we confirm the price on the pickup day.
5. Do not burn cable
Burning cable to strip it is illegal and oxidises the copper surface, lowering its grade. Handing cable over as it is, is the better choice in every way.
Send us a photo of your copper and we will identify the grade together, tell you the day's price and then collect it from your address.
